Steel in the everyday world
Steel performs an essential role in the development of modern societies. Steel connects people and places; it transports food and materials; it builds houses and hospitals, schools and skyscrapers. Strong, versatile, durable and 100% recyclable, steel is all around us. It is a living element of our cities, homes and everyday life.
Steel is everywhere in our lives for a reason. Steel works together with all other materials to accelerate the growth and development of society. It is the basis of the last 100 years of progress and will be equally essential to meeting the challenges of the next 100 years.
Global average steel use per capita increased from 150kg in 2001 to 208kg in 2015, and by 2050 the use of steel will have doubled to meet the needs of a growing population, according to World Steel Association.
Steel is used in every major industry, such as the energy, civil construction, automotive, transport, infrastructure, machinery and packing industries. The steel industry is the second largest in the world, behind only the oil & gas industry, with income of $900 billion per year. But the development of the oil & gas industry is only possible thanks to steel.
